Twist in the Tail: Children's Stories

Winnie the Pooh—a beloved children's character and subject of an exhibition at London's V&A Museum from December, and "Goodbye Christopher Robin", a forthcoming film—was always thought to have beenmodelled on author A. A. Milne's son's teddy. Not so: this week it emerged that the bear of little brain was based on Growler, a bear belonging to illustrator E. H. Shepard's son. No matter, Pooh's very beariness is the attraction; children's stories have long used anthropomorphised creatures as moral guides. A recent study challenges that prevailing wisdom. Canadian researchers presented four- to six-year-olds with either a story featuring animal protagonists, or an otherwise identical one about humans. When asked to set aside stickers for others who might not get some, those who had read animal tales were stingier. Altruism, it appears, is better conveyed by stories of real people. Put away those animal stories, if you can bear it.
